Belly Butter Brands Compared: Texture, Scent, Panel

Last updated: August 23, 2026

Four names cover most of what gets bought for a dry, stretched bump: Burt’s Bees, Earth Mama, Palmer’s and Bio-Oil. They sit on the same shelf, they are aimed at the same person, and their packaging says roughly the same thing. In use they are not remotely interchangeable.

The differences that decide it are texture, scent and what is on the ingredient panel. This page puts all four side by side on those three axes, so you can pick the one you will actually keep using rather than the one with the most convincing box.

Quick Answer

Which belly butter brand should you pick?

  • Burt’s Bees if you want thick and genuinely unscented, available in any drugstore.
  • Earth Mama if certified organic sourcing and a plant based panel are the point, and a light citrus scent is fine.
  • Palmer’s if you want the densest cocoa butter balm for overnight, and you like the smell of cocoa.
  • Bio-Oil if you would rather use an oil than a butter, and you check which of its two formulas you are buying.

Bottom line: they differ in weight and smell, not in what they can do, so choose on the two things you will notice daily.

The Three Things That Separate Them

Texture decides when you can use a product. Scent decides whether you will keep using it once your nose changes. The ingredient panel decides whether it fits whatever you have chosen to avoid. Everything else on the packaging is positioning.

Worth saying once, plainly: none of these four is a treatment, and the differences below are not differences in outcome. Our page on what these products can and cannot do is the honest version of that.

Burt’s Bees Mama Bee

The thick, plain one. Shea, cocoa and jojoba butters with vitamin E, sold as a fragrance free formula, in a tub you can buy in almost any drugstore without planning ahead. It is stiff out of the tub and needs warming between the palms, and it stays on the skin for a long time.

Pick it if your nose has turned and you want the least eventful product in the category. The main gripe in reviews is tub size relative to twice daily use. Our full page on it goes further.

Earth Mama

The certified one. An aloe and plant oil based rich cream rather than a solid butter, certified by Oregon Tilth to the NSF/ANSI 305 standard for personal care products containing organic ingredients, with no petroleum, mineral oil or added synthetic fragrance.

The catch is that no added fragrance is not the same as no smell: sweet orange, neroli and vanilla are on the list and the tub smells of them. Lighter and easier to spread than the drugstore butters, and sold in a larger container. See our Earth Mama page for the detail.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula

The dense one. A cocoa butter balm that softens on contact and stays exactly where you put it, which makes it the overnight product of the four. It is the cheapest per ounce of the group and the easiest to find in a supermarket.

The cocoa scent is unmistakable and is the deciding factor for most buyers, in both directions. It is also the greasiest under clothes, so it suits people who apply it and then get into bed rather than into a work shirt.

Bio-Oil

The odd one out, because it is an oil rather than a butter. It absorbs fast, spreads across a whole bump from a few drops, and is by far the easiest to apply in the third trimester when you are working by feel.

Check which formula you are buying. The standard version lists retinyl palmitate and added fragrance; the Natural version is built on plant oils without either. Our Bio-Oil page explains why that distinction matters to some buyers.

If you read only one column, read scent. It is the attribute that most often decides whether a tub gets finished or abandoned on a nightstand.

How Owners Actually Choose

Most people do not compare panels. They buy whatever was recommended, discover they dislike either the smell or the greasiness, and buy a second product that fixes that specific complaint. The two purchases usually end up being one thick unscented tub and one light oil.

Skipping straight to that outcome is cheaper. Buy a fragrance free butter for bedtime and, if you dislike a film under clothes, an oil for the daytime, as our format comparison sets out.

Container Size Is the Quiet Difference

Nobody compares tub sizes in the shop, and then everybody runs out. Applying twice a day to a bump that keeps growing gets through a small tub faster than the packaging suggests, and the four brands here are sold in noticeably different volumes for similar money.

Earth Mama’s tub is the largest of the butters, Palmer’s is the smallest and the cheapest to replace, and an oil goes furthest of all because a few drops cover the whole bump. If you know you will be applying every evening for months, buy the biggest version of whichever one you settle on rather than the trial size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brand is the thickest? Palmer’s cocoa butter balm, followed by the Burt’s Bees tub. Earth Mama is a rich cream rather than a true butter, and Bio-Oil is a liquid oil, so those two are noticeably lighter.

Which is best for a sensitive nose? The Burt’s Bees fragrance free tub, because it has no added perfume and only the faint background smell of the butters themselves. Bio-Oil Natural is the fragrance free option among the oils.

Is the organic one better? Better sourced, on a documented standard. As a moisturizer it does the same physical job as the others, so buy it because the certification matters to you, not because you expect a different result.

Can I use a plain drugstore body cream instead? Yes. A thick fragrance free cream does the same thing for less money, which is why our ingredient guide suggests keeping the routine simple.

Do any of them stop marks from forming? No topical product has been shown to do that, and we do not repeat the packaging language that suggests otherwise. Buy these for comfort on dry, tight skin.

If the skin on your bump is itching beyond ordinary dryness, or reacting to a product, speak to your midwife, OB-GYN or a dermatologist rather than working through the shelf.

The Bottom Line

Burt’s Bees for plain and thick, Earth Mama for certification and an easier texture, Palmer’s for the densest overnight balm, Bio-Oil for people who want an oil. Choose on scent and weight, because that is where the four genuinely differ. Read next: the full belly butter guide and what to do about an itchy bump.
